Crown Lengthening

A periodontist performs a crown lengthening procedure by reshaping gum tissue, and sometimes bone, to expose more of the tooth’s surface in order to fit the crown and give the tooth its natural shape. It is a common procedure and often takes less than an hour to complete. Crown lengthening is necessary if there is not enough tooth to hold the crown as a broken or impacted tooth may prevent the crown from sticking firmly to it.

In some cases, the crown can be lengthened in order to improve the smile of the gums.

How is the crown lengthening process performed?

The periodontist at the French Center for Dentistry and Aesthetics performs the crown lengthening procedure in an outpatient setting, which enables the patient to go home on the same day. The time taken for the procedure varies depending on the number of teeth that need crown lengthening and whether there is a need to remove soft tissues and bones. If you have a temporary crown on any of your adjacent teeth, your periodontist may remove it prior to the crown lengthening procedure and replace it later.
